Citrus Juicer Reviews

What makes a citrus juicer so special? Why can't I just use any juice? The short answer to these two questions is that most juicers are not designed to cope with the thick skin, membrane and seeds that are characteristic of these fruits. So what to look for...

Special Features

Citrus juicers are especially designed to efficiently juice fruits such as grapefruit, orange, lime, lemon and tangerine. For anyone intending to extract juice from citrus on a regular basis it is recommended that they use a juicer specifically designed for the job.

Only a specifically designed juicer will extract all possible nutrients from citrus without encountering issues as in other types of juicers as a result of the thick skin, seeds and fibrous membrane characteristic of lemons, oranges etc.

These juicers are also capable of extracting pectin. Pectin is a soluble fiber proven to aid in lowering high cholesterol.

There is no juice better for you than a glass of freshly extracted tangy juice. As a source for Vitamin C, niacin, potassium, calcium and thiamine, citrus fruit is among the best. To optimize health benefits of your juice, drink it immediately after juicing to reduce any oxidation or loss of nutrition.

Nutritional value is one of the main reasons that people decide to create their own juices instead of buying it at the store. Freshly extracted juice is a rich source of antioxidants, live enzymes, minerals and vitamins that are critical to the proper function of the human body.

Juices you buy at the store normally contain preservatives or will have been pasteurized to extend shelf life and to conform to health standards for packaged foods. Both preservatives and pasteurization are damaging to the nutritional value of a juice.

Most juices that are purchased are reconstituted from concentrate. When you read the list of ingredients of a store bought juice you may be surprised to find that your juice is basically a chemical concoction with very little actual juice content. By juicing your own fruit you know you are getting the real thing, 100% authentic juice.

Juicing whole lime and lemon is OK; do not juice whole tangerines, oranges or grapefruit as their skins contains a chemical the human digestive system cannot process.

Two Types

There are two very different types of juices produced by two types of citrus juicers; citrus water or total citrus juice. There is very little or no pulp in citrus water. It is made by squeezing or pressing citrus fruit.

Total citrus juice is as the name implies; juice made by using all parts (including skin) of the citrus fruit. It has higher nutrient content than citrus water. Total citrus juice has a creamy or frothy consistency whereas citrus water is watery and of thin consistency.

Citrus water is sweeter in flavor than total citrus juice. The juicer that is utilized to extract citrus water is much simpler than the complex machine used to extract total citrus juice.

The most basic manual juicers are often plastic or glass and some are made of metal. They are quite simple to use. You merely cut a citrus fruit in half (across the sections not lengthwise), invert and push it onto the juicer. Twist and rotate the fruit on the juicer dome to release the juice to the receptacle below.

The method could not be simpler or quicker for extracting citrus water. It can however, be messy as the juice squirts from the fruit. A manual juicer is great for making limited amounts of citrus water at one time. If you intend your juicer for large amounts of juicing or continuous juicing, you would be well advised to purchase an electric juicer.

An electric citrus juicer is more efficient than manual juicing. Electric citrus juicers are designed with a motorized reamer to extract efficiently, quickly and smoothly. They are very economical ranging in price from $17 for a juicer that processes a single citrus fruit at a time to around $170 for the best citrus juicer available.

The top of the line models are equipped with high powered motors and over sized feed chutes allowing whole fruits to be juiced without cutting. Most high end electric citrus juicers are variable speed equipped to facilitate extraction of juice from fruits of varying texture.

Prices vary widely as do features when it comes to citrus juicers. One surprising model comes with a 34 oz juice capacity and a pulp adjuster not found in all high end machines, all for $24.

Specifically designed to extract juice from citrus fruit, citrus juicers are different from all other juicer types. Citrus juicers have been designed to specifically reduce damage to nutrients contained in the juice and yet maximize the efficiency of juice extraction.

Citrus juicers vary wildly in price and features; anyone can afford one. No matter what type citrus juicer you choose, your day is certain to go better with a glass of tasty, fresh citrus juice to put a smile on your face.
